Jimmy Butler, the star player for the Miami Heat, may be out for an indefinite period of time due to a significant knee injury. During his team's loss to the Philadelphia 76ers in the play-in tournament, Butler appears to have suffered an MCL injury, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. An MRI scheduled for Thursday will determine the extent of the injury, but it could potentially sideline him for an extended period of time, including Friday's make-or-break game against the Chicago Bulls and possibly more of the playoffs.

Butler fell hard during the first quarter of the game, and while he continued playing for 40 minutes, his knee started to limit him as the game went on. His limp seemed worse as he left the arena. Butler averaged 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and five assists per game this season, so his absence could have a significant impact on the Heat's performance. Tyler Herro led the team with 25 points and nine assists in the loss, while Joel Embiid and Nicolas Batum led the 76ers with 23 points and 15 rebounds and 20 points, respectively.

The 76ers clinched the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, setting them up for a first-round series against the New York Knicks. While Butler has not been ruled out, time is running out for his recovery before Miami's next game against the Bulls, which they must win to secure the final seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. If they win, they will advance to a first-round series against the Boston Celtics.
